Jeffrey SnellSenior Teaching Faculty, Civil Society & Community Studies

My career follows a scholar-practitioner model, bringing executive leadership experiences that span the for-profit, non-profit, philanthropic, and higher education sectors. My mentored social innovation start-ups have garnered best new business awards by chambers of commerce, receipt of the Morgridge Force for Positive Change award in Wisconsin, and individual national recognitions, including honors from the Manhattan Institute, selection as a fellow for Ashoka, and receipt of a MacArthur “Genius” Award.

I founded Midwest Social Innovation, LLC (2014), co-founded Marell Development, LLC (2022), served as entrepreneurial mentor for the National Science Foundation’s I-Corps program, and co-created a partnership with The New York Times to embed social innovation problem solving in learning modules (selected by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation).

I was elected in 2011 to Alpha Sigma Nu, the international honor society for Jesuit colleges and universities; appointed in 2018 as a fellow at the Hunt Institute for Engineering and Humanity at Southern Methodist University; and appointed in 2019 as senior fellow in social innovation at ASU’s Lodestar Center.

Prior to my work at the School of Human Ecology, I served as one of five innovation and commercialization specialists for the UW campus Discovery to Product (D2P) Program; CEO at IFAA in Santa Fe, the world’s largest accelerator for artisan social entrepreneurs; special advisor to the president at Marquette University, where I founded the social innovation hub that continues to serve as a central campus resource; COO at the Argosy Foundation, a private family foundation with assets projected at $1 billion; and CEO at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, where I worked with the board of trustees to raise more than $100 million and increased membership to more than 25,000, making the club arguably the largest of more than 1,500 chapters nationally.
