Graduate students in the School of Human Ecology have collaborated to research and publish a list of Madison-area resources to equip the SoHE community with alternatives to calling the police in crisis situations. From witnessing an incident of bias or hate to losing a pair of keys, a user can scan the guide for specific organizations, phone numbers, and websites to help respond without involving police.
“As graduate students at SoHE, we are also members of the larger Madison community,” says Mallory VanMeeter, a member of SoHE’s Graduate Student Organization (GSO) and a PhD student in Civil Society and Community Research. “We put together this resource as a small way to help all of us at SoHE be good neighbors by responding to crisis in ways that keep everyone safer.”
The guide, titled We Keep Us Safe @ SoHE, encourages users to save featured contacts on their phones and to read up on their rights related to protest, policing, and legal support. It also shares additional local guides that address other matters like food insecurity and housing instability.
