Three SoHE faculty earn tenure

Three faculty members in the School of Human Ecology have recently earned tenure:

  • Dr. Carolee Dodge Francis, Professor, Civil Society and Community Studies
  • Dr. Fenaba Addo, Associate Professor, Consumer Science
  • Marianne Fairbanks, Associate Professor, Design Studies

Child Development Lab launches new website

The UW Child Development Lab, housed within SoHE, has launched a new, more user-friendly website to better serve students, researchers, and parents.

NEXT TUESDAY: Faculty discussion on SoHE Course Release Incentive for Research

Faculty are invited to a discussion session with two recent recipients of the SoHE Course Release Incentive Funding for Research, a call issued twice yearly for faculty who seek course release time to pursue research opportunities. More info here.

New research

New paper from Kerr describes mothers’ emotions while caring for their children

A new paper from Dr. Margaret Kerr, of Human Development and Family Studies, describes how mothers report more positive, but also more complex emotions when they are caring for their children compared to when they are not. The findings were published earlier this month in the American Psychological Association journal Emotion.

Flanagan defines “civic engagement” for youth development encyclopedia

The Encyclopedia of Child and Adolescent Development solicited and recently published a definition from Dr. Connie Flanagan, SoHE’s Associate Dean and the Vaughan Bascom Professor in Women, Family, and Community, of “civic engagement and community consciousness.”

Olive discusses keeping one’s credit in check

As part of UW Extension’s Check Your Free Credit Report Campaign, Peggy Olive, Financial Capability Specialist with Extension and with SoHE’s Center for Financial Security, gave a brief podcast interview on the key things to know to keep one’s credit in check.

Fairbanks and Angus on the Chazen at 50

As part of its 50th anniversary celebration, the Chazen Museum at the University of Wisconsin–Madison will feature art and performances by individuals from across the university, including work by Marianne Fairbanks, recently tenured in Design Studies, and a gallery talk February 6 by Jennifer Angus, the Audrey Rothermel Bascom Professor in Human Ecology, also of Design Studies. Gaddis’s book featured in FoodTank op-ed

Kari Hamerschlag, Deputy Director of Friends of the Earth’s Food and Agriculture Program and manager of its Climate-Friendly Food Program, cited Civil Society and Community Studies‘ Dr. Jennifer Gaddis‘s recent book The Labor of Lunch in arguing for better school lunch policies in California. for the group FoodTank.
