SoHE shares school-specific reopening plan for fall semester

Following UW–Madison’s newly released, more detailed guidance under its Smart Restart plan for the coming semester, SoHE leadership shared Human Ecology’s own school-specific safeguards.

Alicia Hazen is a recipient of campus advising award

Thanks to the support of her colleagues and students, SAA’s Alicia Hazen received UW-Madison’s 2020 Community Leadership Award from the Office of Undergraduate Advising.

SoHE papermakers featured in industry magazine

The North American Hand Papermakers Association has released the latest issue of its biannual magazine Bull and Branch, which reaches national and international audiences working in the field. Dedicated to the special topic of “workspaces,” the issue features writing by Professor Mary Hark, current Design Studies MFA student Henry Obeng, and recent Design Studies MFA alum Maria Amalia Wood. The magazine’s editor is Hannah O’Hare Bennett, also a recent Design Studies MFA alum.

Webinar: Raison on meditation for well-being and resilience

Dr. Charles Raison, the Mary Sue and Mike Shannon Chair for Healthy Minds, Children & Families, Professor in Human Development and Family Studies, joined Lobsang Tenzin Negi, Executive Director of the Center for Contemplative Science and Compassion-Based Ethics at Emory University and developer of the Compassion-Based Cognitive Training (CBCT®) program, to discuss meditation for well-being and resilience, especially during challenging times.

Angus art on display at Museum of Wisconsin Art

The Museum of Wisconsin Art in West Bend has adjusted to the pandemic by rearranging items in its permanent collection to accommodate physical distancing guidelines. Included in its new setup is art by Jennifer Angus, the Audrey Rothermel Bascom Professor in Human Ecology in Design Studies.

Video: Roundtable on food studies scholarship and activism

Civil Society and Community Research PhD student Allison Hellenbrand recently facilitated a roundtable discussion on scholarship and activism in food studies, now available in full to view online. Among the panelists were Dr. Jennifer Gaddis, of Civil Society and Community Studies, along with several others invited by the Graduate Association of Food Studies (the graduate organization of the Association for the Study of Food and Society) and the Graduate Student and Early Career Professional Committee of the Agriculture, Food, and Human Values Society.

The Progressive Radio Network’s iEat Green podcast recently hosted Civil Society and Community Studies assistant professor Dr. Jennifer Gaddis to discuss school lunch and farm-to-school programs.

Dr. Charles Raison also presented a session on the effects of chronic increased inflammation on mental health at the 2020 virtual Psych Congress Elevate conference. Video and transcript of the talk are available from the Psychiatric and Behavioral Health Learning Network.

New research from SoHE

Jing and Kirkorian on teaching with televised stories

Mengguo Jing, a PhD student in Human Development and Family Studies, is first author on an article with Dr. Heather Kirkorian, the Laura M. Secord Chair in Early Childhood Development at SoHE, examining the the effects of previewing on preschoolers’ comprehension of narrative and educational content in a television program. Fellow HDFS PhD student Elizabeth Skora Horgan served as a research assistant in the work. Their findings were presented at the 2019 meetings of the Society for Research in Child Development and International Communication Association.

Grad student Ahrens on college internship participation and outcomes

Vivien Ahrens, a PhD student in Civil Society and Community Research at SoHE, has published a report with colleagues in the Wisconsin Center for Education Research and the Center for Research on College-Workforce Transitions (both at UW–Madison). The group examined participation rates, internship components and structure, and outcomes among students at Benedict College.
