Create a shadow box as part of the 2018 Community Altar Project

Altar project 2017 set upBe a part of this year’s Community Alter Project: Remembrance and Celebration.

Create your own commemorative alter shadow box for a project being led by SoHE DS Professor Carolyn Kallenborn. Completed alters will be on display in the main entry in Nancy Nicholas Hall. In its second year, Remembrance and Celebration is inspired by the Mexican traditions for Day of the Dead. Last year’s contributions included displays honoring people and pets. The individual alters are meant to come together for a public display that build bridges between individuals and community.

Pick up a free alter box at the SoHE Advising & Career Center or at the Design Gallery during regular gallery hours; Wed-Fri 10am-4pm, Thurs 10am-7pm, Sat-Sun noon-4pm. Small, medium and large boxes available (12″ x 16″ / 24″ x 16″ / 36″ x 24″).

Return your finished box by Sunday, October 21st to the Design Gallery. The full exhibition of all alters opens Oct 22 and runs through November 6. A reception takes place November 1, 4:30-6:30pm.

Tips from Carolyn Kallenborn in creating your alter box:
“Make your altar in whatever way feels most meaningful to you. It can be done as an individual or as a group. You can draw from a specific tradition or create something completely expressive. You can make or arrange objects or pictures, paint, glued, write letters or poems, build, draw, etc. You can work 2 or 3 dimensional. There is no right or wrong. Do what feels right and creates your own remembrance and celebration of the person, community or event you are honoring.”
