SoHE students win Wisconsin Idea Fellowships
Last week, the UW Morgridge Center for Public Service announced the winners of the Wisconsin Idea Fellowship were announced last week, with great news for SoHE students Danielle Wendricks (Community and Nonprofit Leadership and History double major) and Nina Sugaya (Interior Architecture), whose projects were supervised respectively by SoHE instructors Michael Maguire and Lesley Sager.
CSCR PhD students defend dissertations
Civil Society and Community Research (CSCR) PhD student Eva Vivian recently successfully defended her dissertation, “Chasing a Dream against All Odds.” Rachel Byington, also of CSCR, successfully defended her dissertation last Friday, “‘And We Were a Unit’: Urban American Indian Youth Perspectives on Act 31.”
Applied MS graduates present capstone projects
Students completing SoHE’s applied master’s degree in Human Ecology gave a virtual symposium of their various capstone projects last week. Students were supervised by Faculty Program Director Dr. Sarah Halpern-Meekin.

Dr. J. Michael Collins, SoHE’s Fetzer Family Chair in Consumer and Personal Finance, joined fellow experts from across UW to discuss COVID-19 impacts and developments as part of the UW Discovery Building’s public lecture series, Crossroads of Ideas, now viewable online in full.

Dr. Sarah Halpern-Meekin, of Human Development and Family Studies, was quoted in Urban Milwaukee on the compounding impacts of COVID-19 for low-income families and communities.

Dr. Fenaba Addo, SoHE’s Lorna Jorgenson Wendt Associate Professor in Money, Relationships, and Equality (MORE), and Consumer Science PhD student had their research featured in Vox News and on MSN Money regarding the anticipated impacts for millennials of the COVID-19-induced economic recession.

Dr. Christine Whelan, Director of the Money, Relationships and Equality Initiative (MORE) and Clinical Professor of Consumer Science, joined Channel 3000 news hosts to offer tips on maintaining meaningful connections with loved ones… even when conversation topics run dry because we’re not getting out much.
