Gaddis op-ed on school lunch workers in USA Today
Dr. Jennifer Gaddis, SoHE’s Jane Rafferty Thiele Faculty Fellow and Assistant Professor of Civil Society and Community Studies, had an op-ed with the USA Today network on the heroic work of school lunch providers in this time (also posted to outlets Asbury Park Press and Newsrust).

Thomas joined launch of virtual panel series on Black men’s well-being during pandemic
Dr. Alvin Thomas, Assistant Professor of Human Development and Family Studies, joined Wisconsin’s Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes, Dr. Logan Edwards, Dr. Jonas Lee, Haywood Simmons, and Aaron Perry to kick off a series of panel discussions Saturday on Black men’s mental health and well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. Audio of the conversation is available online, and the group was featured in Madison365 ahead of the event and on WKOW News last night. News of upcoming related events is forthcoming—stay tuned!
Hartley on coronavirus’s impact on families with children with autism
Dr. Sigan Hartley, SoHE’s 100 Women Chair in Human Ecology and Associate Professor of Human Development and Family Studies, joined WPR’s Central Time program to discuss the particular challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic for families with children on the autism spectrum or with other developmental disabilities.
Fairbanks gives online weaving tutorial using basic home supplies
Associate Professor of Design Studies Marianne Fairbanks offered a step-by-step video tutorial in at-home weaving using just a few basic supplies one likely has lying around the house.
Angus online exhibit tour featured in The Day
Though museums are closed across the country, several are offering 3D online tours of some of their exhibits. One of these is the Florence Griswold Museum, which The Day noted is featuring the work of Jennifer Angus, the Audrey Rothermel Bascom Professor in Human Ecology and Professor of Design Studies.

Bartfeld on food security and policy with Extension
Dr. Judi Bartfeld, SoHE’s Meta Schroeder Beckner Outreach Professor and Food Security Research and Policy Specialist with UW Extension, detailed food security issues under COVID-19 as they relate to the topic’s four supporting pillars: financial security, federal programs, emergency infrastructure, and robust food systems.
Huambachano and Gaddis to speak on Nelson Institute’s Earth Day panel
Drs. Mariaelena Huambachano and Jennifer Gaddis will join the Nelson Institute’s annual Earth Day conference (fully virtual this year) on April 20 as part of the Food & Justice for All breakout session. Channel 3000 highlighted the event earlier this week.

Bea research on military lending trends wins award
IPUMS has announced the recipients of its 2019 research awards, naming Consumer Science’s Dr. Megan Bea as the winner of the Spatial Award for Student Research for part of her PhD dissertation on the 2007 Military Lending Act and its impacts on the financial well-being of military families.
Ashton wins UW Provost’s service award
Dr. Lydia Ashton, of Consumer Science, has won the Exceptional Service Award from the UW Office of the Provost. The award recognizes her outstanding departmental service, her support for graduate students, her mentorship of Advanced Opportunity Fellowship recipients, and her research and online course development work.
