Kerr and Kirkorian advise parents managing children at home
With many families now juggling additional childcare and education duties under “safer at home” restrictions, Human Development and Family Studies faculty have stepped up to offer guidance from their areas of expertise. Heather Kirkorian was quoted at length in the Wisconsin State Journal discussing online education tools for children, and Margaret Kerr gave advice for co-parents, or those not residing together, to plan and maintain supportive shared childcare duties.

Peggy Olive spoke with WPR last week, and J. Michael Collins was quoted in The Guardian and the Cap Times, describing COVID-19’s financial impacts for families. The two continue to update Extension’s web page of resources on the issue.

#OnWisconsinAtHome effort features HLATC
A new project from University Communications encourages Wisconsinites to enjoy campus resources from the comfort and safety of their own homes. Last week, #OnWisconsinAtHome included SoHE’s own Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection (HLATC), whose 13,000+-piece digital collection is available for free online for anyone to explore, in its list of recommendations. HLATC is part of the Center for Design and Material Culture.

Speaking of online art, the Hartfort Courant notes that Jennifer Angus‘s show at the Florence Griswold Museum, “Silver Wings and Golden Scales,” is now viewable online.

Poehlmann-Tynan authors article for new Zero to Three issue
The latest issue of Zero to Three’s popular journal is dedicated to the topic Trauma and Resilience in Young Children: Effects and Experiences of Parental Incarceration and includes an article by Dorothy A. O’Brien Professor in Human Ecology Julie Poehlmann-Tynan (Human Development and Family Studies), “Reuniting Young Children with Their Incarcerated Parents.”
Shin and Ponto on 3D user interaction
A new paper presented by Jung-hye Shin and Kevin Ponto, of Design Studies, compares three modes of three-dimensional user interaction to move virtual objects in mixed reality. Their findings were published in the proceedings of the 2020 IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces (VR).
