New accelerated MS in Design + Innovation
The School of Human Ecology is one of five colleges and schools at the University of Wisconsin–Madison collaboratively launching a new accelerated Master of Science in Design + Innovation. Michelle Kwasny, academic director of the MS in Design + Innovation and a professor in SoHE’s design studies department, says of the opportunity, “Students can come in and dabble in all five areas of study—engineering, business, design, data, and art—but they can also dig deeper in any one of those areas to complement experience they already have.” The 12-month, team-based program will see its first cohort start in May 2020 and will foster skills that employers say they struggle to find among job candidates. Judi Bartfeld on reducing hunger in Wisconsin
USA Today-Central Wisconsin interviewed Dr. Judi Bartfeld at length about ways to reduce hunger in Wisconsin. She emphasized a focus on root causes, identifying four areas for policy solutions: financial security, food and nutrition programs, access to affordable food, and the emergency food system. Bartfeld is the Meta Schroeder Beckner Outreach Professor at SoHE and the Food Security Research and Policy Specialist with UW–Madison Division of Extension. Read the full story.
Jennifer Angus exhibit “dazzles” in St. Pete’s, FL
Design studies professor Jennifer Angus has received more glowing praise for her show at the Museum of Fine Art, St. Petersburg. ArtDaily.com calls it “dazzling,” while Creative Loafing Tampa Bay sums it up in a headline: “You could spend the rest of 2019 exploring MFA St. Pete’s Jennifer Angus ‘Grasshopper’ exhibition.”
J. Michael Collins named to Gov. Evers’ Task Force on Retirement Security
Dr. J. Michael Collins is one of 20 individuals appointed last month to Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers’ Task Force on Retirement Security, which will hold its first meeting this Friday. Collins is faculty director of the Center for Financial Security (CFS) at SoHE and the Fetzer Family Chair in Consumer Science. CFS’s Retirement and Disability Research Center recently received news of an increased funding award for its second year of operation.
New research: Mindful parenting of adolescents
Human Development and Family Studies graduate student Ye Rang Park published her first paper in the journal Family Process exploring the outcomes of mindful parenting of teenagers. Secondary authors included faculty members Larissa Duncan and Robert L. Nix.
Lori Diprete Brown wins award from United Nations Association of Dane County
This Sunday, Lori Diprete Brown, a distinguished faculty associate in the civil society and community studies department at SoHE, will be awarded the Global Citizen Award by the United Nations Association of Dane County. Learn more here.
