Design History PhD student Natalie Wright won a major research award to support her examination of the histories of making and disability in the United States. Wright just completed her first year of coursework with SoHE, under advisor Dr. Marina Moskowitz, the Lynn and Gary Mecklenburg Chair in Textiles, Material Culture, and Design, and holds the Jane Graff Textile Research Assistantship in the Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection at SoHE.
And if you missed it last week, SoHE will welcome new faculty in Design Studies and Consumer Science this coming academic year, and Professor Robert Nix won a Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment Award to expand the Positive Parenting Program across Wisconsin’s highest-risk communities.

Dr. Brian McInnes, Associate Professor in Civil Society and Community Studies, joined WPR’s Central Time and WHYsconsin programs to discuss the prevalence and meaning of “wau” in so many Wisconsin place names.
Gaddis discusses her book with Real Food Media
Real Food Media interviewed Dr. Jennifer Gaddis, Jane Rafferty Thiele Faculty Fellow and Assistant Professor in Civil Society and Community Studies, for its Real Food Reads podcast. They discussed her book, The Labor of Lunch: Why We Need Real Food and Real Jobs in American Public Schools, and what the future of school cafeterias could look like.
Incoming student wins Summit Credit Union scholarship
Summit Credit Union named Alexcia Brown, a graduating senior at Madison East High School, as this year’s Faust Scholarship winner. The $5,000 award is given annually in honor of Andy Faust’s 28 years as CEO of Summit to a student who is a member of both Summit Credit Union and the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County. Brown is currently an intern at Madison East High’s Summit branch and plans to attend UW–Madison’s School of Human Ecology in the fall. SoHE alumna Kim Sponem, winner of the 2018 Wisconsin Idea Alumni Award, has been CEO of Summit Credit Union since 2002.
Whelan in NYT on the death of unorthodox self-help writer Barbara Sher
Dr. Christine Whelan, Clinical Professor of Consumer Science and Director of the Money, Relationships, and Equality Initiative at SoHE, described Barbara Sher, a good-humored self-help writer, as “part of the self-help movement that talks about work as a source of identity, self-fulfillment, and a way of living one’s purpose in the world” for a New York Times obituary this week.
CFS research cited in program helping women increase their savings
Research by the Center for Financial Security, in conjunction with the Annie E. Casey Foundation, was cited in the Philadelphia Citizen measuring the success of a program helping lower-income women save money and plan their spending.

Fairbanks featured in Chazen’s virtual happy hour
Marianne Fairbanks, Associate Professor in Design Studies, joined the Chazen Museum of Art yesterday for its biweekly “Our Kind of Happy Hour.” In it, she discussed her art currently on display and why she decided to create it in conversation with a Chazen collection item by Richard Anuszkiewicz. She also described her current projects and new routines, and gave a tour of her studio space.
Six SoHE undergraduate students win Leadership Certificate Award
Rachel Alsbury, Lorence Ayag, Julie Framstad, Gretchen Miller, Kendall Schoenike, and Benjamin Stone have won the Leadership Certificate Award from the UW Center for Leadership and Involvement for spring 2020. The award recognizes students who have committed to developing their own leadership capacity and to excelling both inside and outside the classroom. Read more about SoHE’s six winners here.
