Dean Shim voices support for international students
Dean Soyeon Shim wrote a message to the SoHE community voicing her support for international students after a new guidance from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office last week on the Student Exchange and Visitor Program. The guidance was ultimately rescinded Tuesday afternoon, and Dean Shim updated her message then.
Junior Scholars Intensive Training year two goes virtual
The Center for Financial Security Retirement and Disability Research Center hosted its second annual Junior Scholars Intensive Training program in June, supporting the relationship- and skills-building of early-career researchers who are underrepresented in the field.
Harvey wins BBVA grant to research secondary school financial education
Dr. Melody Harvey, joining SoHE this fall as Assistant Professor in Consumer Science, has won one of seven international financial education research grants from BBVA to support her investigation of the effectiveness of financial education programs in secondary schools to change young people’s behaviors and decisions.
Thomas wins ICTR AHEAD pilot award
Dr. Alvin Thomas, Assistant Professor of Human Development and Family Studies, has won one of three grants from the 2020 UW Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) Advancing Health Equity and Diversity (AHEAD) Pilot Program. The AHEAD grants support UW investigators conducting health disparities research with underserved populations. He also joined University of Michigan’s Center for the Education of Women+’s podcast Tuesday.

Wisconsin civic health report garners more coverage
Spectrum News 1 (Milwaukee) featured a recent report out of the Center for Community and Nonprofit Studies (“the CommNS”) on the state of civic health in Wisconsin. Authors of the report include CommNS Executive Director Mary Beth Collins and Civil Society and Community Studies PhD students Mallory VanMeeter and Garret Zastoupil.

New research from SoHE
Skora Horgan and Poehlmann-Tynan on children’s video chats with incarcerated parents
Elizabeth Skora Horgan, the Shannon Graduate Fellow in Early Childhood Development and a PhD student in Human Development and Family Studies, is first author on a paper in the Journal of Children and Media with Dr. Julie Poehlmann-Tynan, SoHE’s Dorothy A. O’Brien Professor in Human Ecology, describing the benefits of in-home video chats between children and their incarcerated parents.
